In modern times.
And one of the great breakthroughs since the World Wide Web was invented.
The mystery is Satoshi Nakamoto, and the great breakthrough is the important contribution of a technological invention called Bitcoin.
Since the discovery of the great internet, there has been no shortage of inventions connected to this vision of a world bound together by screens and communication.
Something was missing alongside this internet. The answer was cryptocurrency: Bitcoin as the first digital currency, on which the many different cryptocurrencies are based.
Who is this Satoshi Nakamoto?
People have speculated about the identity of this person or group ever since Bitcoin came to light.
It began with a so-called white paper in 2008, describing the “recipe” for a revolutionary cryptocurrency.
Then, in 2009, the first bitcoins were digitally mined.
Since then, more and more people have jumped on the cryptocurrency train. As more people joined, cryptocurrency prices rose sharply — or went “to the moon”, a well-known expression in the community.
But who is Satoshi Nakamoto? Where does he or she come from? Is it an older person? Is that person still alive? Or is it a secret group from some intelligence agency?
And what was the intention behind the invention?
People have speculated about this for a decade, leading some to view it as a boring subject because it gets nowhere and people have grown tired of it. New conclusions and theories may appear in the media here and there, but perhaps only for the particularly interested.
For a person or group to have seen the possibility of creating a digital currency before everyone else was an achievement in itself. The fact that this person or group’s pseudonym became one of the greatest mysteries in modern history has also left a lasting mark on the historical timeline.
Who Satoshi Nakamoto might be will remain a topic of discussion in the community and in the back of people’s minds.
Unless, at some point in the future, concrete evidence emerges about who this person or group is, or the person or group chooses to reveal their identity.
And that evidence would need to be good enough to convince even the most sceptical person.
Until then, if it ever happens, that part of the story will remain unwritten, like some of the greatest mysteries: Jack the Ripper or the whereabouts of Jimmy Hoffa. More about Jimmy here, and a film on Netflix here. https://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Hoffa https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1302006/
