Imagine a device connected to your emotions and your brain. This device lets you give yourself every possible feeling and stimulation. What if it replaced today’s drug problem, allowing people with addictions in the future to choose among the effects of every category of drug without affecting their health?
Brain damage
If the simulation is run hard enough, it could easily damage the brain. The simulation would therefore need a built-in safeguard that knows when to limit the experience.
What about the feeling of food?
The feeling of inhaling incredibly delicious food: your favourite dish or exclusive cuisine from every continent. Whether or not you are a food lover, after experiencing this kind of emotional stimulation in your mind, you might simply eat something basic and inexpensive and connect the simulation device to your body to enjoy Michelin-starred restaurants.
The simulation does not have to take place in virtual reality, like a virtual city in a game. What I mean is that it could exist without images, solely to trigger your emotions inside your brain.
Solving crime
This kind of simulation, triggering your emotions, might eventually address the problem of drug abuse. The idea is that the simulation would pose a low risk to health while the feeling would be exactly the same as if you had consumed a drug or alcohol.
How would you react to this kind of technology?
Solving a major problem that society has faced for decades could leave us with mixed feelings when the time comes. Or can we predict the consequences of this technology? Let us hope it brings positive change to our growing, modern civilisation.
Use it, then come back out as the same person you were an hour ago (a future advertising slogan). A programmed AI looks after you in case you overuse it. Simulating something like this could create addiction at the highest level. This would of course be a new kind of addiction to deal with. Would we simply get a new global problem?
In time, an engineer and researcher may come within reach and give us a solution: a technology that solves a major problem for society.
